When planning repairs in an apartment or private house, considerable attention is paid to wall decoration, the selection of suitable comfortable furniture, appliances, and the design of decorative elements. At the same time, the ceiling surface remains undeservedly forgotten, and yet its arrangement plays an important role in creating a certain style, a beautiful, cozy atmosphere. To date, two-level drywall ceilings that adorn any interiors - from the Khrushchev to the most luxurious apartments - have gained great recognition. In our article, we will consider what caused such their popularity, and we will reveal some secrets of successful designs.

Features of two-level ceilings

Ceilings made in the form of several tiers with the use of drywall are able to make the space of the room more airy and spectacular. Such designs make it possible to radically change the geometry of the room and have a lot of advantages compared to flat surfaces, namely:

- The ability to mask any flaws in the ceiling surface - if the ceiling has irregularities, cracks or other defects, all this will easily be hidden behind a flat plasterboard, which will greatly speed up the design process;

- With the participation of two-level structures, it is easy to carry out zoning of even a small room, highlighting one or another territory of the room with curly reliefs;

- Drywall is easy to handle, and this makes it possible to implement the most fantastic design solutions;

- The material has good resistance to conditions of high humidity, so it is permissible to build structures from it in any rooms, even such as the bathroom and kitchen;

- Two-level structures can make the ceiling more airy in small rooms, and in excessively large ones, on the contrary, “lower” the walls, making the room more comfortable;

- Plasterboard ceilings provide a lot of opportunities for decoration using various color schemes, stretch linens, a variety of ways to organize lighting, including hidden lighting, halogen and LED compositions.

In addition to all these advantages, it is also worth noting the relatively small costs that the organization of the drywall construction will entail. If you have some skills, it is quite possible to build a two-level ceiling in the apartment with your own hands.

Types of two-level drywall ceilings

Multilevel drywall ceilings have a wide variety of designs. As we have already said, the material is quite malleable, therefore it allows you to create not only straight lines, but also various wavy, rounded structures. From the total mass of options, two main groups can be distinguished into which two-level ceilings are conditionally divided:

1. Drywall decoration of individual sections. This type implies that the natural surface of the ceiling remains by itself, and only individual "islands" are formed with drywall. This method will save costs, but you need to take into account that its use makes sense only when the primary surface is absolutely flat. Often you can see the finish with plasterboard boxes around the perimeter of the room, while the design may have a visor behind which the LED backlight is “hidden”. This option is good for small rooms, making the ceiling more high and airy.For zoning, plasterboard panels are installed in certain areas, for example, in a studio apartment, a relaxation area or a sleeping place can be emphasized.

2. Full two-level design with plasterboard panels. In this case, one tier completely covers the ceiling surface, and additional decorative details are already mounted to it. This method is effective in spacious rooms, when the initial state of the ceiling plane requires serious adjustment.

Despite the design differences, both options are quite capable of coping with any, even the most creative design goals. They are a good tool for successfully masking communications and adjusting non-standard forms of premises.

Design and decoration of a two-level ceiling

To build a bare structure from drywall, even if it has the most luxurious forms, is not enough to get a truly excellent interior. It is very important to choose the right method and color of finishing materials. For such designs, the following finishes are most acceptable:

Painting is a completely affordable and easy way to decorate the ceiling surface with a water-based composition, which can be done on our own without the involvement of specialists. At the same time, it is possible to choose a color or a shade depending on the general color scheme of the interior;

Whitewashing - is similar to painting in terms of accessibility of decoration, but differs by its fragility and rather “capricious” attitude to humidity conditions, therefore it is better to refuse it in favor of other materials for kitchens and bathrooms;

Wallpapering - this method will require more strength and patience, perhaps even attracting specialists if the design has geometric features. The strips of wallpaper should not overlap, but should fit strictly butt to each other so as not to spoil the general appearance of the surface. Not so long ago, pasting two-level ceilings with wallpaper was something unusual. However, now it can be found quite often, especially in the interiors of the halls. Dense wallpapers are able to hide minor surface imperfections, and this is a big plus for designs where only island parts are sheathed with plasterboard.

A profitable solution will be wallpaper for painting, which allows you to periodically change the situation in the room, without spending extra time and effort. Photo wall murals presented on the modern market in a wide assortment are quite popular. They may contain voluminous drawings, luminous elements and are used more often in bedrooms and nurseries;

Stretch ceilings - this type of finish can be safely called the most innovative. Here we are talking about canvases, which, under the action of high temperature, tighten the surface. The material has a variety of surfaces. Depending on the design and personal wishes, you can design a matte ceiling (for classic interiors), glossy (helps to change the volume, increase visual space), fabric (the most expensive, creating a unique rich and sophisticated atmosphere).

In modern interiors, quite often, and one can even say, quite often there are combinations of ceiling finishing materials that allow you to fantasize in full force, visually reduce or increase the space. For example, stretch cloths form the interior of the structure, and white paint - the drywall perimeter. Painting can be done in different colors in different areas, drawing a line in the zoning of the room.

Ideas for room interiors

Plasterboard ceilings can differ not only in design features, decor, they also have their differences depending on the functional load of the room, its size and shape.

The living room is designed to create a rich but cozy atmosphere not only for owners, but also for guests at home. Here you can not be afraid to use bright colors, but make sure that they harmoniously fit into the atmosphere and style direction. Here, combinations of finishing materials on the ceiling surface, not without dynamic contrasts, will look great.

Having designed a two-level design with shades, you can more effectively emphasize the zones present in the room, to equip a large-scale lighting system with many tiered lamps and mysterious lighting.

For small halls, which are often found in Khrushchev, lightweight two-level constructions with glossy canvases are suitable, which with their reflection will expand the space. The volume of the room will also be given by diffused lighting of many spotlights and a duo ceiling with walls in one color palette.

Two-level plasterboard ceiling in the kitchen

In the kitchen, there may be different forms of drywall surfaces that are able to adjust and zone the room, and most importantly, hide communications. Most often there are square perimeters that give narrow rooms the right shape. In spacious kitchens, rounded shapes indicate central zones, and in small ones - simple island configurations. Do not forget that good lighting is very important for the kitchen, and a two-level ceiling will be the first assistant in the placement of all kinds of lamps.

Two-level plasterboard ceiling in the bedroom

Getting into the bedroom, the man most of all wants to relax and have a good rest, so that the coming day comes along with a good morning mood. The ceiling in the decoration of this room plays an important role, since it is this surface that we see when lying down or waking up.

It is better to avoid bright colors, glossy surfaces, preferring calm pastel tones, but the wave-like lines in the design and the presence of eye-pleasing patterns will not hinder at all. Often a stepped form crowns a place above a sleeping bed, indicating the territory of rest. This design looks pretty nice in a company with a canopy that gives special comfort and a romantic mood.

Two-level drywall ceiling in the nursery

It’s very important for children that their little world be colorful and bright, therefore, stretch fabrics, especially with photo printing, will be the best option here. Beautiful landscape pictures, images of friendly cartoon and fairy-tale characters, the endless blue of the starry sky - all this can fill the child’s room with a special fairytale atmosphere, the spirit of adventure.

When the baby grows up and his interests begin to change, the canvas can easily be changed to a more suitable teenage design and personal preferences of the already young homeowner. The undoubted advantage of using drywall for decorating a nursery is its environmental friendliness and naturalness - factors that will ensure a healthy indoor climate.
